History

Belmont was built in 1775 by Thomas Mouat. The Mouats were important in Shetland history, and, like many other old families, traced their descent back to Scotland and as far back as a Norman follower of William the Conquerer. Their history at Belmont is well documented, down to a complete inventory of the house’s contents in 1790, feather mattresses and all. In the late 18th century Thomas decided that the time had come to build a mansion in Unst which would be equal, in architectural quality, if not in size, to the most fashionable homes then being constructed elsewhere. He toured the Lothians, visiting and viewing examples of contemporary design. In 1775 he completed Belmont, it was to remain the family home into the 20th century.
